
In 2025, the Levin Center conducted a study of all 50 states to examine how legislatures ensure government programs work effectively for citizens. Factors such as legislative oversight committees, routine engagement with executive agencies, collection of casework data, digital transparency tools, and user-centered policy evaluation were of particular importance. The Mississippi Legislature has active oversight committees in both chambers and a well-run joint oversight committee with professional staff — the Joint Legislative Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review (PEER). While PEER makes its reports publicly available, it is difficult to find other basic information about legislative oversight in Mississippi, let alone people-centered oversight activity.
